TUNU Project Driving Change in Makueni Institutions
Advancing Transparency and Accountability in higher learning institutions
The Tupigane na Ufisadi (TUNU) Project continues to make remarkable strides in strengthening ethics, accountability, and youth participation in governance across Makueni County. Implemented through a partnership of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), Transparency International Kenya (TI-Kenya), and The Institute for Social Accountability (TISA), with support from the European Union (EU), the project is transforming higher learning institutions into hubs of integrity and responsible leadership.
Through PTD Kenya and the Makueni Civil Society Network (MACSON), the project has successfully established and strengthened Integrity Clubs in key institutions, notably Makueni University College (MUCO) and Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) – Mbuvo Campus.
Growing a Culture of Integrity in Campuses
At Makueni University College (MUCO), the establishment of an Integrity Club has created a vibrant platform for students to actively engage in anti-corruption advocacy, ethical leadership, and social accountability. Students have undergone capacity-building sessions in communication, public speaking, debate, and advocacy tools, equipping them to become ambassadors of integrity within and beyond the campus.
Similarly, at KMTC Mbuvo Campus, a fully functional Integrity Club has been successfully established. This milestone reflects the power of persistence, collaboration, and shared commitment to ethical transformation.
Innovative Awareness Through Edutainment
A key highlight of the TUNU Project has been the use of edutainment as a powerful tool for advocacy. Through theatre, drama, skits, spoken word, and creative performances, students are translating complex governance and anti-corruption messages into engaging and relatable content.
These creative approaches have:
- Increased awareness on integrity and accountability
- Encouraged open dialogue on corruption issues
- Enhanced student participation and ownership
- Made learning interactive, practical, and impactful
Edutainment has proven to be a game-changer in reaching wider student audiences and fostering behavioral change.
Digital Advocacy & Youth Empowerment
The project has also embraced digital tools and platforms to strengthen youth engagement. Students have been trained on using social media, digital storytelling, and online advocacy tools to champion transparency and accountability.
This has enabled youth to:
- Raise awareness on governance issues
- Promote ethical leadership online
- Engage peers and communities in civic discourse
- Amplify their voices beyond institutional boundaries
Strengthening Partnerships & Impact
The success of the TUNU Project is anchored on strong partnerships between civil society, institutions, and development partners. PTD Kenya and MACSON have played a critical role in mobilizing stakeholders, coordinating activities, and ensuring sustainability of initiatives.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the European Union (EU) and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), alongside TI-Kenya and TISA, for their unwavering support in advancing youth-led accountability and anti-corruption efforts.
Looking Ahead
The establishment of Integrity Clubs at MUCO and KMTC Mbuvo marks just the beginning. These platforms are nurturing a new generation of ethical leaders, accountability champions, and change-makers.
As the TUNU Project progresses, the focus remains on:
- Expanding Integrity Clubs to more institutions
- Strengthening youth-led advocacy
- Enhancing collaboration between stakeholders
- Promoting sustainable anti-corruption initiatives
Conclusion
The TUNU Project is not just building clubs—it is building a movement. A movement of informed, empowered, and responsible youth committed to shaping a transparent and accountable society.
Together, through partnership and innovation, we are creating lasting impact in Makueni County and beyond.
